A massive example of Venetian Gothic, after the Basilica of St. Mark's, the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the most remarkable ecclesiastical complex in Venice, as well as being one of the most important Franciscan foundations in Italy. It is one of the most important religious building of the city for its abundance of art works.
Originally built between 1236 and 1338 by the Franciscan Conventual Friars, and thoroughly rebuild in the XIV century, it is one of the most important church of Venice, together with the Church of SS.Giovanni and Paolo. Recognizable by its impressive architectonical features in Franciscan-Gothic style, with two side aisles and seven apsidal chapels, the central rose window and the ‘300 cotto bell tower, which is one of the most higher of the city.
In its interior, broad and solemn with three divided aisles, are treasured some of the most important Renaissance works, such as Trittico della Madonna e i Santi by Bellini(1488), the pala dell'Assunta by Tiziano (1516-1518), one of the ‘400 venetian masterpiece and the wooden statue of S. Giovanni Battista, by Donatello (1450 circa).
