Extraordinary example of Venetian-Byzantine architecture. In its interior a polychrome glass and marble mosaic floor and one of the most old painting in Venice.

It is said to be built in the 7th century, at the time of the firsts refugees immigrations from the mainland to the islands, the church was first dedicated to Saint Mary, only after 1125 was dedicated to Saint Donato, when the remains of the saint was moved from Cephalonia.
The outer part of the apse building is very particular: it aims to the street, with hexagonal plan with fake portico and columns and upper gallery with arches, precious example for architectural beauty and riches of ornamental elements. The isolated bell tower is a square tower divided into three style orders, ended with a belfry with three-light windows.
Its interior with three naves divided into five columns at each side, is made with Greek marble with Venetian.Byzantine style’s capitals. The mosaic floor is similar to the one in Saint Mark’s church.
