This simple and evocative Gothic church of the 8th century was rebuilt in the 15th century half-hidden behind Riva degli Schiavoni. The church greets us at the entrance with Christ’s Baptism by Cima da Conegliano.

According to the tradition, the church was founded by S. Magno, bishop of Oderzo who was forced to move to the lagoon to escape the Longobardic invasion in 639 and decided to build a church to provide support to his religious community. The task of building eight churches appeared to him in a dream directly from the Heaven. According to the tradition, St. John Baptist appeared to St. Magno and showed him where to erect the churches.

In its interiora gravestone certifies the baptism of the musician Antonio Vivaldi, occurred in this church in 1678. In the church of San Giovanni in Bragora there are interesting artworks, such as paintings by A.Vivarini and J.Palma il Giovane

Today, the Church of Saint Giovanni in Bragora in Venice is part of the extensive Association for the Churches of the Patriarchate of Venice (Chorus), which protects and makes accessible numerous churches and sacred places throughout the island, also contributing to the conservation, restoration, and enhancement of Venice's architectural and artistic heritage.
