The church was built in the 17th century thanks to the Discalced (“Scalzi”) Carmelites under a design by Baldassarre Longhena.
The façade is a work by Giuseppe Sardi and it is the only one in Venice made with Carrara marbles.
The marble façade is the only one in Venice. It was financed by Gerolamo Cavazza and then realized by Giuseppe Sardi between 1672 and 1680. Built in the late-Baroque venetian style, it is diveded into two parts by columns. In the façade statues like the Virgin Mary with the Child and St. Cathrine from Siena can be seen. They were realized by Bernardo Falconi, as well as the statue of St. Tommaso d'Aquino that stood on the right side of the façade.
This super example of Baroque art hosts on the vault of the aisle a painting of Gianbattista Tiepolo, who painted the whole ceiling.
