The Church of Pietà was built on the XV century and rebuilt between 1745 and 1760 by Giorgio Massari (1687-1766), but the classical façade was added only in 1906. In its interior, there are frescos by Gianbattista Tiepolo, such as the gorgeous one on the ceiling Triumph of Faith (1755).
The church was named after the nearby hospital, which was meant to raise abandoned children. This orphanage became so popular that they put a warning plaque – still visible on the lateral wall – with the eternal damnation for those parents intended to abandon their children.
From 1703 until 1740 Antonio Vivaldi supervised musical bands, wrote many oratorios, songs and vocal pieces for the Pietà Chorus, that the Church itself became famous for his musical pieces and it is now known as Vivaldi’s Church. Concerts are held all year long, above all Vivaldi’s ones.
