La bella addormentata è forse la fiaba più struggente e celebre del periodo romantico. La rinomata versione di Charles Perrault suggestiona Tchaikovsky a incentrarvi il secondo dei suoi tre balletti, su sollecitazione del principe Ivan Vsevolozhsky, all’epoca potente sovrintendente dei Teatri Imperiali di San Pietroburgo, che si occupa anche della riduzione a libretto. Nel 1890 l’opera fa esplodere il Teatro Mariinskij, anche grazie alla coreografia di un asso della danza quale Marius Petipa, che interviene pure nella stesura del testo. Aurora, fanciulla dormiente e vittima di un incantesimo, resta nella memoria di tutti anche grazie al cult movie targato Disney.
