Located on the islands of Venice’s cemetery, between Fondamenta Nove and the island of Murano, this beautiful Renaissance church completely built with Istrian stone is a work by Mauro Codussi.
In 1212 the island was given to three Camaldolese monks, who founded a monastery that was occupy until 1810. Among the guests of the monastery: monk Mauro, who made the globe in the Library Marciana, monk Capellari, who would be the future pope Gregorio XVI. In 1829 the monastery became the house of Padri Riformati who still now run the Church of San Michele, annex to the cemetery.
Next to the church façade stands out the Emiliani Chapel of 1530. On the other side, the 15th century cloister, which gives access to the cemetery. The interior of the church, with a three naves plan, is very interesting for its harmonious set of monuments and sculptures, besides the rich decorations wonderfully connected with the elegant structure of the building.
