Extraordinary example of Venetian -Gothic style, the church was built by the Dominican from 1246 until 1430.
This church has always had an important role for the Serenissima since, from the 15th century it was where all the doges were buried. The funeral monuments of the doges and of famous people make the church of San Giovanni e Paolo the Pantheon of Venice history.
The polygonal apses are to be mentioned for their architecture, as well as the right side of the church overlooking the namesake square.
Its interior is similar to the Gothic structure of the Church dei Frari, and it treasures many important woks such as the polittico di S. Vincenzo Ferreri by a young Giovanni Bellini (around 1465), Gloria di S. Domenico by G.B. Piazzetta (1727) and the canvas by Paolo Veronese and Lotto. Among the many celebrated monuments are to be mentioned: the one of the doge Pietro Mocenigo by Pietro Lombardo (1481), the one fo the doge Andrea Vendramin by Pietro and Tullio Lombardo (15th century) on the presbytery and the Gothic monument of the doge Marco Corner.
